The teams can consist of architects and specialists as well as investors, politicans and any citizens interested in observing and affecting the early stages of the planning process. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ipcity.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/ws_urbren_image1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"ws_urbren_image1\" width=\"500\" height=\"197\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-265\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This innovates the practice of urban renewal, by bringing it outdoors, involving citizens and other stakeholders and emphasizing its cooperative and experimental aspects. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mixed Reality:<br \/>\nExploring different ways of combining the real and virtual domains within the mixed reality technologies in the context of urban planning. <\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Collaboration:<br \/>\nHow to support collaboration between the participants during the design process.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Immediacy:<br \/>\nHow to support users in generating \u2018content\u2019 in a fluid and informal way as part of the process<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Integration:<br \/>\nHow to integrate the technologies with common work practices of planners, such as creating scale models (of buildings), sketching and annotating, as well as negotiation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>MR-Tent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The mixed reality tools we are developing are hosted in our MR-Tent (mixed-reality-tent). The MR-Tent, a formidable design task in itself, provides a shelter for the project equipment, also protecting projections from ambient light, with flexible openings and a view onto the site.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ipcity.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/tent.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"tent.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"242\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-165\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Projects<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Real urban renewal projects were involved as partners for field work:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Psychiatric hospital of Sainte-Anne, Paris.<\/li>\n<li>Urban renewal office of Vienna\u2019s 16th district.<\/li>\n<li>New courthouse in Paris (TGI de Paris)<\/li>\n<li>Former barracks in Cergy-Pontoise<\/li>\n<li>Public park in Ponotise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The technologies have been also presented to a broader public: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.villeeuropeennedessciences.fr\">European City of Science<\/a> (La Ville Europ\u00e9enne des Siences 2008) in Paris<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/stadtentwicklung\/ausstellungen\/2007\/drausseninderstadt\/index.htm\">Exhibition: Outdoors in the City <\/a>(Drau\u00dfen in der Stadt 2007) in Vienna<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>ColorTable<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ColorTable is a tangible user interface, designed for creating mixed reality scenes in medium-sized urban planning contexts. It allows assigning content to colored tokens and positioning them on a physical map. The composed scene is visualized on the fly on a three-dimensional projection. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ipcity.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/ws_urbren_image3.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"ws_urbren_image3\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-267\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ipcity.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/ws_urbren_image2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"ws_urbren_image2\" width=\"500\" height=\"100\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Different content types are supported:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>    2d billboards (trees, flowers, ..)<\/li>\n<li>     3d geometries (houses, building blocks, ..)<\/li>\n<li>     curved streets (with varying traffic types and densities)<\/li>\n<li>     ground textures (grass, stone, water,&#8230;)<\/li>\n<li>     photo-realistic panoramic background with depth-map<\/li>\n<li>     and many more&#8230; <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The traffic as well as many of the billboards and geometries are associated with sounds.
